De Lindevallei

The Lindevallei, located to the south of Wolvega, is an expansive nature reserve of approximately 860 hectares managed by It Fryske Gea. The area stretches between the villages of De Hoeve, Steggerda, and Wolvega. It offers a diverse wetland landscape within the valley of the Linde river.

The area is an oasis of tranquility and houses a rich biodiversity, including rare wetland birds, aquatic and wetland plants, insects, and meadow birds. Thanks to the appealing cycling and walking paths, the Lindevallei is easily accessible for nature enthusiasts.

The Lindevallei is part of the ‘natte as’, a chain of wetland areas on the border of Friesland and Overijssel. The nature management focuses on connecting larger areas, such as the Weerribben and Wieden in North-West Overijssel, and the Rottige Meente and Lindevallei in Friesland.

In the Lindevallei, there are also cultural and historical monuments, such as the restored octagonal watermill ‘De Gooijer’ at Blessebrug and the 18th-century wooden peat sluice in the Helomapolder. These monuments are reminders of the area’s rich history and are well worth a visit.

For bird enthusiasts, there is a bird-watching hide in the Catspoolder, accessible via a path from Domeinenweg. Additionally, the Lindevallei is a popular spot for ice skating in the winter, with suitable locations such as the Lindepoolder and Blesbroggepoolder.
